For the last 10 years, American artist Ra Paulette has been walking alone into New Mexico’s desert to work. He spends his time carving a sandstone cave that he found, turning it into a wonderful subterranean space full of light.

With no one but his dog for company, Paulette created different designs and styles for every cavern, giving each one very specific qualities and textures.

The purpose of this gigantic artwork is to create an environment that would inspire “spiritual renewal and personal well being.” It will also serve as a venue for artistic events once it’s finished.

Space Replay: A Hovering Ball that Records and Replays Public Space Sounds

Designers at the Royal College of Art have created a floating black sphere that records and replays sounds it picks up after a short delay.

Called “Space Replay” this project was designed by Will Yates-Johnson, Francesco Tacchini and Julinka Ebhardt. The idea was to create a hovering object that explores and manipulates transitional public spaces with particular acoustic properties. “By constantly recording and replaying these ambient sounds,” the designers write, “the levitating sphere produces a delayed echo of human activity.”

Some people have a disorder that allows them to “see” music, numbers and letters as colors

Some musicians and composers have a brain disorder that allows them to “see” music as colors or shapes. This sensory disorder is called synesthesia. Mozart is said to have had this condition. He said that the key of D major had a warm “orangey” sound to it, while B-flat minor was blackish. A major was a rainbow of colors to him. This may explain why he wrote some of his music using different colors for different music notes, and why much of his music is in major keys.
